Flags on the Meander
Click here to see Flags Gallery
Colourful flags fluttering in the breeze along the Meander River bank. Each flag painted by students from a Tasmanian primary school, home education group or Child Care Centre. Flags by the Meander launched in 2009 when twenty four flags were designed and painted by Primary Scools and Education Groups across Tasmania. The feedback from the public seeing these flags flying on the riverbank and hanging as an exhibition was so positive that the Rotary Club of Deloraine has decided to hold it again in 2010. |

A project to engage Primary Schools in Tasmania with the Tasmanian Craft Fair, an annual commuity event organised by the Rotary Club of Deloraine, where all funds raised go directly back into ocal, statewide, national and international community-building projects. "Flags by the Meander" has been developed by the Rotary Club of Deloraine to involve school children in this important event, allowing them to learn and grow from experiencing the power of a community banding together to improve the lives of disadvantaged people around the world. Quilting is as old as needle and thread. This year, the 30th Tasmanian Craft Fair is proud to present for the first tie in Australia an exhibition of Art Quilts, "The Hoffman Challenge" from New Zealand. Thus it seems a natural fit that the theme for the flags should be Quilts - A Stitch in Time. Up to forty flags will be painted by school students from Tasmanian primary schools on this theme. |

On the days of the Craft Fair, community artist Sean Manners wil be available to set up and take down the flags, as well as have a space where more flags can be created by anybody passing by. This project will raise the awareness of the Tasmanian Craft Fair in the schools that elect to take part, as well as the parents of the students involved. The flags will add colour and movement to the Riverbank in the area of the Rotary Park during the Tasmanian Craft Fair and help to draw people to that area. There will be awards for the Best Overall Flag and Most Imaginiative Use of Colour. These will be awarded on Friday 29th October 2010. There will also be a People's Choice Award which will be awarded on Monday 1st November 2010. |
