Parade Puppets

Fun to make, fun to use, these crazy backpack puppets really allow the imagination to fly and can really give height, movement and colour to a parade or event, especially if there are several of them.

We have recently completed two community projects in Tasmania, with the making of Felicity Sweetlips for the Port Sorrel Regatta, and six backpack puppets were showcased in Mannequin Madness, for La Trobe's Youth Week Celebrations.

Felicity Sweetlips was a parade puppet that was commissioned for the 2007 Port Sorrell Regatta in Northern Tasmania. It was designed so that on the day of the Regatta members of the public who were visiting the event could design, draw and decorate their own fish scales which were added to the puppet throughout the day. Felicity then “swam” her way around the event. She is now being used as a display at special events throughout the Latrobe Council area..

“Mannequin Mania” was a project commissioned for National Youth Week 2007 by LaTrobe Council, Northern Tasmania. Six large parade puppets were built by twenty students from LaTrobe High School over a three day period. The theme was “Launch Yourself” . Out of this came six very different backpack puppets including a Dragon, a bird, wasp, fairy angel, hippie and a frog. All these fantastic creations are being used at different events during Youth Week and beyond by the same students that created them. They were built utilising a lot of recycled materials sourced from the excellent tip shops that are everywhere in Tasmania

Banners and Flags

Banners or flags are a fantastic way to decorate a space or liven up a parade. They catch the eye as they move in the breeze or are very effective in covering large spaces. Once made they can be used time and time again. Using simple techniques, banners or flags of any size can be made. An ideal activity for all ages. Great for family involvement.

Lantern Making

A fantastic, safe way to light up an evening or a night event. Ideal for family participation, children or adults. Lanterns can be as small or as big as your imagination wants them to be and are made from cane, paper, glue and candles, or if inside, electric lighting.

Large Images

Whether it is a complete parade or a site specific event or an entry into one; large images and floats can be built and used by members of the public guided by an experienced community artist. The theme, site, route, season, weather, participants and available materials along with community input are all taken into consideration when designing, planning and implementing such an event.

Puppets Plus workshops are individually costed based on the requirements of each activity.
